I was just searching for Nicaragua in the news and found this little tidbit:  Star magazine, purveyor of celebrity gossip, noted that actor Matthew  McConaughey partied like a rock star in San Juan del Sur and managed to have his wallet and $2K swiped in the process.

Read it here:  http://www.starmagazine.com/matthew_mcconaughey_nicaragua_drunk/news/14287

I guess the lesson is, "Wow, famous people now go to Nicaragua to party!"  No, maybe the lesson is, "even famous people can get robbed, so be smart!"

Anyway, the ruckus doesn't seem to have lessoned his star appeal.  Says one reader in that article's comments section, "I think he is awesome and i don't care if a baby on the way are not i will f@*K him in a heartbeat and i have 3 kids of my own and happily married!!!!!!
-- hot on matt"

Way to go, Nicaragua.

I've been told again and again by locals at San Juan del Sur that the people are absolutely honest, would never steal, and you're perfectly safe there.  But they go on to say that hoodlums from Managua come to San Juan del Juan to prey on tourists.

Of course:  Leave your bulging wallet in the hotel safe.  And eat at the market--to me, the worst robbery is the prices charged for meals along the main drag by the beach.
