We will be in Nicaragua in mid-to late December. Would you advise reserving accommodations  before we arrive? Will Christmas pose problems for finding lodging? And, do the buses run on Christmas and New Years? Any advice about Nica travel during that time of year is welcome. We plan to visit Esteli, Corn Island, and around Masaya/Granada/Rivas/Ometepe.

Also, for Christmas eve, is there a preferred area to be? I am thinking smaller towns, and attending a mass to enjoy the local festivities.

Yes, this is peak season and reservations in touristy places like Granada and San Juan del Sur (or any other beach destination) are recommended. Public transport generally runs limited schedules on holidays, so  you 'll have to check with local drivers and your hotel once in town. For Esteli, no reservations required. Small village or barrio on Xmas eve is a great idea -- you'll eat many nacatamales and drink lots of coffee.
