I am thinking about starting my trip in Honduras (San Pedro Sula/Bay Islands Area) and then continuing down to Nicaragua.  The tenative plan is to fly into San Pedro Sula and out of Managua.  This would be ideal for us as we only have 11 days and dont want to waste precious time driving back to San Pedro Sula if we are already in SW Nica.  My only question is - can you rent cars internationally down there? If we pick up a car at the San Pedro airport, can we return it in Managua? Does anyone have any experience with this?

I know in the Yucatan countries it is an issue.  If this could work it would help us make the most of every day of our vacation, but I just don't want to get stuck in a horrible spot with the rental agencies!

Thank you!

Peebo -- I seriously doubt you can rent a car in Honduras and return it in Nicaragua. I've never heard of this and would be very surprised if it's possible. Please let us know. Otherwise, you can take an 8-hour express bus from Tegucigalpa to Managua, but that wastes a whole day ... my advice is if you only have 11 days to just stick to one country.

I have researched it on almost every trip I've EVER been on, and, excluding Europe, it is impossible.  I always try though! I'm going to keep researching and if I find anything I will post the info.  In the meantime, if anyone knows how to do this - please save me the time and trouble and share your knowledge! Thanks! :-)

The only one I've heard of is a Mexican rental company in Cancun that will let you drive a car into Belize.

In Belize, there is one company (Crystal, I think) that lets you drive across the Guatemalan border to Tikal.
