I'm looking for someplace that has as least some selection of bicycles somewhere between the airport and Rivas.  I want to buy a couple of bikes on my way in from the airport next month for riding around town, used is OK as long as it's in descent shape.  Any suggestions?

Thanks,
Wu

The best option, Shannon's big store of bicycles in Managua, just burned down a few weeks ago. They may have bikes at Roberto Huembes market on the south side of Managua -- they have pretty much everything there. You can also try to market in Masaya. How easily will you be able to transport a bike? Will you have your own vehicle?

Thanks,

I'll have a pickup truck.  I was hoping to find something near the highway when driving from the Airport to Rivas.  I'll have other bags etc in the back of the truck so I hope to find a place the sells bikes where I can keep an eye on things while I'm shopping.  Otherwise I can go back after unloading, but I hate to have to backtrack two hours to Managua to get them.  I was hoping there would be somplace in Rivas.

If anyone is interested in the future I've been informed there are bicycles available in the Rivas Marketplace.  Brands are Toby Trek, Rally and Lynx for about $65.00.

Well, Mercado Oriental isn't your safest bet, but for bicycles, it's the first place I would look.  Be careful, and go with a friend, preferably a Nicaraguan friend.  On the outskirts of Oriental you will find a wide variety of bikes - usually Chinese-made, but some used bikes and even the occasional American bike.  Happy bargaining.

Slightly out of the way, in Jinotega, there is a giant warehouse with old, used, mostly rusty bikes. You have to hunt for one that suits you. I bought mine for $40 - the rust comes off. I paid a couple of dollars to spiff/grease it up and I couldn't be happier.  Jessica  www.ToursToNicaragua.com

Bikes are available even in small villages.  They're made in China and surprisingly cheap, certainly less than a hundred US dollars.
