The discussion of crime and weapons on this thread brings up a question-Is pepper spray legal in Nicaragua and if so where is a safe place to purchase some?

That's a great question. I know of at least one person who entered the country with some pepper spray, but I don't think she declared it when arriving (although she must have had, or ought to have had to declare it on the outbound flight).
I don't know of any place that formally sells pepper spray, like a guns/weapon shop or equivalent, in Nicaragua. That said, I'm sure you can find it, probably in Oriental Market, which does not qualify as safe.
