Many visitors who come to Nicaragua also are members the hash house harriers. If you are a hasher, and are planning to visit Nicaragua, there are two kennels that meet in Managua on alternate Sundays.

If you've never heard of a hash, it is a group of people who meet to run/walk/crawl (depending on your fitness), and then drink beer (also depending on your fitness). This is an international movement, with chapters in pretty much any country you can think of. In Managua, the hash draws mostly an international crowd, and the language of choice is usually English.

The oldest group is the Managua Hash House Harriers. They have been running the hash for 15 years, without interruption, every 15 days, on Sundays. This hash is a family event, so kids are welcome. Information about them is available at

www.geocities.com/managuah3

The other group is the Pussy Hash House Harriers - Managua. This group has been running for a little over a year. They meet on those Sundays when the MH3 is not running. The Phash is an adult-only hash. Their website is at www.geocities.com/phashhouse The P-HASHERS are notorious for hardly ever updating their website, but there is a list of emails of hashers you can contact, and they are always happy to provide information about the runs. PHASHERS also gather socially outside the hash, and you will usually find them at the Shannon Bar in Managua.

I hope this information is useful. Running the hash is also a good way to see Nicaragua, since both groups schedule runs around places that can be off the beaten path.

Cynara  - I've got a couple of friends who have participated in the HHH and not a one of them can run more than 300 yards without stopping for a cold beer.  What's the beer to running ratio of the club in Managua?  Sounds to me like a lot of fun.

I guess if you're going to run in Managua you might as well be drunk. Sounds like a puke-fest. Watch out for the "gringo trap" open sewer pits in the streets. Anyone ever fall in?

Melissa,
Nope, no one has fallen in. It's a miracle! We've been chased by dogs, run through all kinds of garbage, and run in all weather conditions, but no one has ever fallen in a sewer.
That's mostly because the runs are usually cross country, so sewers are the least of our concerns. I think stray dogs are worse.
Sounds like you've been in Managua. Yup, sewers and flash floods are a pain.

Randall,
average run is between 5 - 7 K's, but most hashers crawl. We've had the occasional FRB (front running bastard), who confuses the hash with the Boston Marathon, but most people just want to get back to the beer. Hashes aren't competitive, so there is no rush to be the first to arrive back, and if you did, you wouldn't get a medal.
The hash collects a small fee, between 50 (no food) and 80 cordobas (with food) at the managua hash, and between 70 - 80 (same) at the PHASH. That entitles you to all the beer/softies you can drink, and all you can eat. It's a pretty good deal.

Chelito, sign up on their mailing list. Especially with the PHASH, since they won't be having a hash web master for a while, and i'm sure they won't be updating that page regularly.
