I'm wondering if it's just me? It seems everytime I meet a new person (nica) another lets me know what a bad person they are. is this common for anyone else?

Perhaps you're just meeting bad people?  Ha ha ha.  Or jealousy for your attention from the second person.

I wouldn't take it too seriously - everyone's got something to say.

Hola Surfmasachapa,
It's not just you. I've learned to just allow others (Nicas) to give me their opinion about someone, but ultimately I make my own decisions about the company I keep. In fact, I have two friends who do NOT like each other but I still maintain friendships with both of them. I've made it very clear that I will not be gossiping back and forth between the two and it somehow works out. I've also realized that we do it here, too, in the States. It just looks different. Ahhhh chisme. Smiley  - Jessica  www.ToursToNicaragua.com

It has been the same in my experience. But not only gossiping about other people. I would recommend not telling anything that is relatively confidential to a Nicaraguan. Because it will be across town in a matter of minutes! It's amazing how well Nica's are "talkers" about everything they hear!!!  Shocked

NicaChica -- definitely true, but I wouldn't attribute this to just being Nicaraguan -- I think it's a small-town phenomenon in any country in the world, but especially amplified in a small Latin-American one where people have lots of free time to sit around and chat.

Jessica's got it right:  Be as firm as you need to be--you're not going to be involved in gossip, and you are not interested in hearing it.
I have learned this the hard way, living a year in a Nicaraguan town of 1200 people.
